Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study has conducted a “semantic” research on very “polysemous” prepositions, which are usually regarded mistakenly as “function” words, i.e., void of semantic meanings. The research has analyzed their idiomatic phrases, in order to provide a key to the homology studies on English and Japanese.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

急速にグローバル化が進むこの世界において、リンガフランカである英語が日常生活に使えるようになることは必須の課題であり、喫緊の課題である。その中において、本研究は、一般的には「意味がない」と思われている語に焦点をあて、その意味論を研究することにより、日本語と英語の様々な違いに共通する「潮流」を見つけ出し、より自然な英語を話す契機を見つけるものである。
