| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a template and develop a new approach toward providing instructions for writing in English. The effect measurement for university students confirmed that this tool has a good effect on discourse-level writing training in English, although the abstraction needs to be adjusted according to the proficiency level of the students.
It is said that teachers of English in Japan often encounter many student-written English texts, which are well formed at the sentence level, but these texts make it easy to guess their original Japanese way of thinking at the discourse level. To avoid this, all English learners must become accustomed to the “preferred discourse patterns of English” and express what they want to say by following these patterns and relegating the Japanese discourse patterns to the background. This study demonstrated that a template could guide English learners to produce more natural-sounding English texts.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
英語を担当する教員であれば「センテンスレベルでは容認可能であっても、文章全体を見ると母語の日本語（の発想）が透けて見える英文」に遭遇した経験があると思われる。より自然な英文を作成するには、センテンスレベルで的確な英文を書く練習だけでは不十分であり、母語である日本語の思考パターンをいったん背景化させ、英語で好まれる談話展開パターンや表現方法に習熟する必要があると言える。
本研究では、様々なジャンルのサンプル英文からスキーマを抽出し、英語で好まれる談話展開パターンを可視化するテンプレートを作成した。これにより中上級者向けの新しい英語ライティング用教材を提供する基盤が整備されたと言える。
