Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study was accomplished through an international collaboration between Dr. Grenon at the University of Tokyo, Dr. Sheppard at Waseda University and Dr. Archibald at the University of Victoria in Canada.
The research project endeavored to compare the efficiency of three training methods to improve the perception of novel English sound contrasts by non-native listeners of English (native Japanese speakers). The results of this study have contributed to demonstrate the feasibility of learning sound contrasts at the very onset of learning a new language, possibly before mastering the script or the meaning of the new words.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

These results have implications that can change when and how speech sounds are taught in the language classroom, and may contribute to increase the rate of vocabulary learning, especially in early beginners.
