| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Intercultural competence is crucial for students to develop in order to communicate effectively with others who have different socio-cultural backgrounds. Drawing on the reference descriptors in EPOSTL or FREPA, this study investigated the possibility of utilizing them in English teaching/learning context in Japan. The questionnaire survey conducted on high school English teachers revealed that the IC descriptors are generally perceived positively, but some descriptors categorized in IC Skills had mixed results. In order to make appropriate guidelines for developing IC in English language education, tasks or activities which can be implemented in the classroom should be explored more.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
相互文化的能力（IC）を可視化し体系的に育成する上で、ICに関連するディスクリプタの活用の有効性が確認できた。日本の英語教育においては、異文化に興味を持ち、知識を獲得することは奨励されているが、学習者が自文化を含めた文化と言語の関係をクリティカルに考察したり、文化の異なる対話者と効果的にインタラクションを継続するための知識や技能の育成は体系的に行われていない。多文化化が進む日本社会において、生徒の相互文化的能力の育成は喫緊の課題であり、英語学習を通して、生徒の相互文化的能力の向上が効果的に行われれば、日本国における他者とのコミュニケーションにおいても大いに役立つと考えられる。
