Outline of Final Research Achievements

Combining ethnographic research with linguistic analysis, we have examined the increasing significance of 'words' experienced by Japanese visual and performing artists. In doing so, we identified genre texts such as portfolio websites and artist statements which need to be presented in Japanese and English to reach both local and global audiences. We examined how these genre texts are actually adapted by Japanese artists. Furthermore, we identified the global linguistic flows by which these new genre texts are being introduced from the West to Japan by granting organisations and the artists themselves. Using these new global genres, Japanese artists are increasingly required to use 'words', which is shifting their art practices. This new practice also poses challenges and dilemmas for them due to the influence of local art discourses and practices as well as existing genre texts.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
