Outline of Final Research Achievements

I clarified the differences between Western-style hospitality and Japanese-style Omotenashi from various angles. The origin of Omotenashi is the Manyoshu banquet, where the goal is to maximize collective value rather than personal value. In other words, the sum of personal values <collective value. On the other hand, in a Western-style banquet, the collective value is a simple sum of personal values. When I compared the rules of the Manyoshu banquet with the rules of the modern karaoke serving, it became clear that the two rules were almost the same. SEN no Rikyu completed the spirit and kata of Omotenashi. Omotenashi is applied to modern business as expressed in karaoke rules.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果の学術的意義は、日本のおもてなしと西洋のホスピタリティの性格は大きく異なっていることの解明、おもてなしの源流は万葉集の宴にあり、それが室町時代の連歌の座や茶会に引き継がれ、その後に、千利休がおもてなしの精神と型を完成させたおもてなしの歴史を明確にした点、またそのおもてなしは現代社会においても脈々と息づいている点の確認(万葉集の宴とカラオケ接待の暗黙のルールの共通性、日本旅館の加賀屋やデパートでの接客方法など)などである。本研究成果の社会的意義については、日本型おもてなしと西洋型ホスピタリティの性格の違いから、西洋型ホスピタリティの日本への導入に際し、その問題点を明確にした点である。
