| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study inquired into how it would be possible to build education--school governance, curriculum and instruction--which can articulate fostering 21st century type of competency or generic skills for problem-solving in real situations with cultivating politically liberal and democratic citizenship. As a result, it made clear a certain theoretical framework for assessing such educational attempts, on the basis not merely of educational theories but of political and sociological theories, and collected through some field researches and reflected on rich data on the cases of such progressive educational practices, which can be though to be meaningful for us to obtain some good perspectives about the future educational reforms in Japan as well.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
現代における教育改革の国際的趨勢である、知識基盤社会対応あるいは２１世紀型という形容詞を関して呼ばれる資質・能力ー非認知的能力を含む現時的な問題解決能力を含む汎用性の高い能力ーの育成を重視する教育は、社会効率主義(social efficiency)に回収されてしまう危険性を否定できないが、本研究は、そうした教育が政治的にリベラルで民主主義的な教育としても成立しうる諸条件を理論・実践の両面で探究を進めた点に学術的かつ社会的意義があると考えられる。また、本研究は、米国の実地調査に基づく研究であるものの、日本における今後の教育改革に関する見通しを明確化する上でも一定の意味を有するように思われる。
