Outline of Final Research Achievements

Reversible magnetic control between paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases has been demonstrated by charge/discharge cycling in an electron-donor/-acceptor metal-organic framework incorporated in a Li-ion battery. Selective electron-doping to acceptor-sites in the framework, accompanied by Li-ion migrations in pores, based on the battery voltage achieved a “magneto-ionic” control for a bulk material, which imagines us to create electrically switchable non-volatile magnets.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現在の代表的な蓄電デバイスであるリチウムイオン電池のシステムを、単なるエネルギー貯蔵システムではなく、バルク物質に対するイオン挿入を介した電子量制御デバイスと捉え、電気的磁性制御を実現した点に新たな学術的な意義がある。バルク物質の電子量を電気的な手法により可逆的に制御する確立された手法は現在のところ他には知られておらず、今後新規物性・物質開拓に道筋をつけたという意味で特筆すべき研究成果となっている。また本研究成果では、一度、磁石にした物質は、通電を行わずとも、その状態を保持するということが明らかにされており、将来的に省エネルギー記憶デバイス等への発展も期待される。
