Outline of Final Research Achievements

Mauthner (M) cells, paired giant reticulospinal neurons, are known to deliver a single spike to initiate escape behavior in teleost fish. Here we demonstrated first that the M-cell’s unique single firing property was established during early development by expressing two types of low threshold potassium channels. Second we completely identified reciprocal inhibitory circuit of the bilateral M-cells and found its critical role for fast escape.

脊椎動物の中で脳のニューロンが単一細胞レベルで同定でき,遺伝子改変標本を活用して分子生物学的,形態学的,神経生理学的および行動学的解析ができるゼブラフィッシュの利点を最大限に生かして,分節に繰り返し発現するニューロン群が,発達過程で異なる興奮性を獲得し,機能的な回路を形成するメカニズムを明らかにした成果は大きく,今後哺乳動物を含む多くの動物への展開が期待される.
