Outline of Final Research Achievements

We successfully determined the chemical structure of the oxyluciferin and luciferase gene involving in the bioluminescence of luminous mushroom. We also found the recycling mechanism of luciferin from oxyluciferin via caffeic acid.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

発光キノコの発光メカニズムが明らかになったことで、発光イメージングツールとしての基礎科学への応用可能性が開かれた。同時に発見されたルシフェリン生合成酵素とルシフェリン再生酵素を異種発現(発光しない生物に発光キノコの発光に関連するこれらの遺伝子を導入する)ことで、本来発光しない生物を緑色に発光させることができると考えられる。
