Outline of Final Research Achievements

We clarified the health effects of exposure to wild Japanese macaques exposed to radioactive materials released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that exploded in March 2011 following the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The concentration of radioactive cesium in muscle showed several tens to several hundreds of Bq / kg in most individuals, and gradually decreased from 2011, but it was contaminated in high concentration as there are still more than 1000 Bq / kg. It was suggested that food may be ingested.
Moreover, when relative growth of the fetus which gave birth before the nuclear disaster and the fetus which got pregnant after the disaster was compared, it became clear that the weight and the size of the head of the fetus after the disaster were significantly reduced.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、放射性物質に被ばくした野生霊長類における健康影響を世界ではじめて明らかにした。調査対象とする福島市は、福島第一から約60㎞に位置するが、サルが生息しているのは主に除染不能な森林内であり、採食している餌生物はいまだに数千Bq/kgと高濃度の放射性物質に汚染され、継続的に被ばくしている。また、同一地域同一種で長期間にわたってセシウム濃度を観測した事例はない。サルは野生状態でも20~25年程度の寿命があり、こうした長期的な低線量被ばくによる健康影響を評価するためには、きわめて適した研究対象である。
