Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes mood shifts that include manic episodes (extremely elevated or irritable moods) and depressive episodes. The etiology of bipolar disorder has not been completely elucidated. Recently, neuroinflammation is associated with etiology and pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases as well as mental disorders. Also, neuroinflammation is caused by the excessive activation of microglia and induces neuronal dysfunction and cell death. We showed that NG2 oligodendrocyte progenitor cells is related with the maintenance of neuronal function and the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder through regulating the activation of microglia.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
