Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We accumulated a large set of clinical data from myopic schoolchildren, and analyzed those in detail. As a result, a close relationship between some components of higher-order aberrations (HOA) and myopia progression (axial elongation) was observed. These findings were reported as a scientific article (Hiraoka T, et al. Relationship between higher-order wavefront aberrations and natural progression of myopia in schoolchildren. Sci Rep. 2017). In addition, we experimentally produce a specially-designed soft contact lens (SCL) with appropriate amounts of HOA. Eight normal volunteers wore the lens, and various examinations were performed. The SCL significantly reduce accommodative responses for near sight and accommodative microfluctuations. This indicated that the specially-designed lens can decrease accommodative burden and ocular fatigue especially at near work.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
