Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to conduct a survey of general nurses regarding the actual state of genetic nursing and clarify the usefulness of workshops in order to build a continuous educational model to improve competencies in genetic nursing practice. The results showed that nurses who had previous training in genetic nursing were generally highly recognized and frequently practiced it . Other nurses were unable to manage genetic counseling and recognized the necessity of knowledge of genetic nursing. A comparison between participants before and after the workshop in genetic nursing showed that interest in genetics was elevated and that nurses’ perception of genetics had changed; further, their recognition of the importance of genetics, basic knowledge of genetics, and competencies in genetic nursing practice had improved. Thus, the study suggested the usefulness of continuous education by repeatedly providing opportunities to improve nurses’ knowledge of genetic nursing and to study cases.
