| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study consisted of surveys conducted as initial steps for the development of deathbed nursing guidelines to be used at leprosariums.For survey 1, a questionnaire was distributed to 769 nurses at 10 different facilities who gave their consent to participate in the study.For survey 2, a semi-structured interview of 10 nurses selected from the 10 facilities was conducted concerning deathbed nursing current conditions and challenges, as well as their feelings about this nursing.For survey 3, a semi-structured interview of 8 residents selected from the 10 facilities was conducted concerning their life history and feelings about
deathbed nursing.The results of these surveys suggested that there is an urgent need for staff education programs covering facility maintenance for deathbed nursing, practical application of living will forms, operation methods for life support, cooperation with other occupations, as well as for the development of a deathbed nursing practice manual.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
全国ハンセン病療養所13施設の入所者の平均年齢が85歳を超え、看取り看護のあり方が喫緊の重要課題になっている現在、入所者の看取り看護におけるガイドラインは未だ構築されていないのが実情である。ハンセン病療養所において看取りに関する研究が着目されなかった理由として、「らい予防法」により入所者に関する情報の発信が困難であったことや、入所者自身が自分の死を公にしたくなかったこと等が考えられる。しかし、入所者の平均年齢が85歳を超え、厚生労働省により終生の在園保障がなされたことから、今後、ハンセン病療養施設における看取り看護のガイドラインが重要視されていくものと考える。
