| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order to evaluate impacts of various decision-makings, measures and visioning in present society from sustainability viewpoint, we aimed to develop a new assessment methodology explicitly incorporating the viewpoints of future generation. Most importantly, we introduced in this study the mechanism called “imaginary future generations” who are tasked with representing future generations in assessment practice. We conducted a series of workshops inviting local citizens in Yahaba town, Iwate prefecture, and obtained relevant data with which we studied the effectiveness of introducing “imaginary future generations.” Based on detailed analyses, we found that such factors as judgement criteria, thinking patterns and weighting changed considerably in case of assessing from future perspectives comparing with the case of current perspective. Using such data, we developed the foundation of the new assessment method incorporating both current and future generation’s viewpoints.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
持続可能社会を構築するためには、各種意思決定や施策等を「持続性」の観点から評価することが重要である。一方で、持続性を考える際に、将来世代の視点をいかに取り入れるか、ということは本質的な課題であり、既存の方法や枠組みではこれが困難であった。本研究では、将来世代になりきり、将来世代の利益を代弁する役割を与えられる「仮想将来世代」を創出するという新たな仕組みを導入し、将来の視点から意思決定や評価を行うことの意味や効果について、住民参加型討議に基づく実証を通じて明らかにした。仮想将来世代を経験することによって、ヒトが過去・現在・未来という時間軸の中で意思決定や判断基準を変化させうることを実証した。
