Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to establish a new archaeological and anthropological method that can reconstruct a prehistoric society―for example, activities related to human migration and marriage―by analyzing fluoride concentrations in tooth enamel from human skeletal remains. A comparison was made of enamel fluoride concentrations between human remains excavated from Usu-Moshiri site and those from Kitakogane Shell Mound, located in areas with a continuous supply of groundwater containing high and low concentrations of volcanic fluoride, respectively. The analysis was performed primarily using mandibular second premolars from human skeletal remains, of which 6 were from Usu-Moshiri site and 4 from Kitakogane Shell Mound. In this presentation, we will report the method of extracting fluoride from tooth enamel, as well as the results of fluoride concentrations, and show the correlation between enamel fluoride concentrations and fluoride content in drinking water.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
