Outline of Final Research Achievements

Using a position sensor, microcomputer, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, we developed a closed-loop brain stimulation system that assesses time-varying motor cortical excitability during naturalistic motor behaviors. A comparison of the M1 excitability during piano playing between pianists and non-musicians found an expertise-specific modulation of the M1 excitation by listening to piano tones only prior to the piano keystroke.
