Outline of Final Research Achievements

Current theoretical linguistics such as cognitive linguistics has achieved a remarkable development, with a variety of useful results of linguistic research supposedly applicable to the teaching of English grammar. While teaching strategies producing the multiplier effect are clearly important contributors to the acquisition of language skills, at least some degree of motivation on the part of learners is also important. This study has focused on the point that language consciousness raising, in particular, grammatical consciousness raising in pedagogy, should be given a place in the language-teaching curriculum, considering the issue of how Construction Grammar can contribute to a better teaching of English grammatical constructions. English has been made a required subject in the elementary school curriculum. The issues under discussion with regard to the teaching of English grammar at the elementary level have also been given special considerations from a cognitive viewpoint.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、言語意識の高揚を図る英語の文法指導に関する研究であり、その意義は、中等英語科教育のみならず、社会的関心の高い小学校英語も視野に入れた研究を行った点にある。言語研究をテーマとする国際会議への出席などを通して、研究分担者ともども認知言語学や語用論の近年の研究成果に検討を加え、場面や状況というコンテクストとの関わりの中で文法指導を進めることの重要性を明らかにした点に学術的意義が認められる。また、現職教員との交流(免許講習などの実践も含む)を通して、特に小学校英語に寄与する文法指導のあり方に注力し。その成果の一部は、『小学校英語内容論入門』等の出版物において発表した。
