| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research, we tried to be careful about the comprehensive system and mutual relations between schools, shrines and churches within Japan’s Empire. Through this research activity, we could find materials to sort in schools and churches. They were successfully produced as research papers and reprints. It must become much of help toward developing colonial studies, history studies of Japanese Empire, and Taiwan history studies.
Especially, we would like to emphasize that some materials that we accessed in this research period clearly showed us that personal and material continuity / discontinuity between premodern - modern age and also those between wartime - postwar period in each local community. We became sure that indoctrination for “nation” forming cannot be understood not only by the narrative of political, economic or legal system reforming.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究では、台湾や韓国に残る植民地期の学校や教会の未整理資料を地域社会に入って見直し、その一部を公開することで、植民地研究・帝国史研究・台湾史研究に新たな資料を提示した。研究活動を通じて、近代日本の国民創出・統合のプロセスが単なる制度的・政策的な展開のもとで進んでいくわけではないことを具体的に提示した。この研究は、われわれを受け入れ、研究の遂行に協力を惜しまなかった台湾や韓国の、研究者ではなく「在野」の人々の存在なしには成立しなかった。こうした諸地域の人々とのつながりを多少とも得られたことが社会的意義であり、また、これらを今後につなげることがわれわれの継続的な責務と考えている。
