Outline of Final Research Achievements

A ‘community of practice’ (CoP) refers to an environment in which participants gain knowledge and skills by participating in practical activities along with other community members. This study explored how EFL learners’ awareness of CoP’s three dimensions; mutual engagement, joint enterprise, and shared repertoire changed during a 15-week writing course. Novice EFL learners became experienced learners as they went on to improve their essay writing skills, relationships with peers and participation in the CoP. The results confirm that joint enterprise and shared repertoire could be the core elements supporting the CoP and that novice-level EFL learners can become better L2 writers by increasing their knowledge about generic structures and certain lexicogrammatical features.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
