| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I collected and analyzed documents related to elementary schools and dormitories set up for boat-dwelling people in Tokyo, Aichi, Osaka, and Hyogo prefectures in Japan. I also conducted fieldwork in Fujian Province, China, visiting seafarers.
As one of the outcomes, I organized a symposium to compare cases in Japan, China (mainland, Hong Kong), and Thailand in order to understand what "settling on land" means to seafarers from a broader perspective. In addition, we published an essay "Living on Boats in a Settlement-Oriented Society: Lianjiachuan Yumin Living Multiple Management Systems in Southern Fujian, China" (2020), which considers the meaning of education for boat-dwelling people living in a settlement-oriented society.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、1）インタビューと参与観察を含む文化人類学的な現地調査、2）教科書、副読本や法律・条例集といったテキストの収集・分析を含む歴史学的な史料調査を並行して行うという手法をとっている。また、2）調査地と調査対象者の選定に、僻地／都市、漁撈／港湾労働など、一定のバリエーションを設定した。これらの方法により、日本と中国の「船上生活者」を一枚岩な存在として捉えることなく多様な姿を描くことが可能になった。また、中国福建省の事例をとおして、船上生活を「すでに失われた生活」としてではなく現在進行形のものとして捉え、現代で主流となっている定住本位型の社会のあり方そのものを問うことができた。
