Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project investigated mechanisms of earthquake generation processes on weak faults that do not support large strain. The main achievements are as follows: (1) we found correlation between moderate earthquake activities and small annual gravity changes at global subduction zones; (2) we showed that parallel geometries sometimes lead to high-speed slip events for faults that host slow slip events.

本研究では、地下の地震活動が、地表でも見られる水の質量移動と力学的に関係する可能性があることを示した。また、繋がっているのではなく並行している複数の断層が近場に存在すると、単独の断層では起こらない挙動が生じ得ることを示した。いずれも、複雑な性質を持つ地震活動と、単純化された地震発生過程モデルとのギャップを埋めるために、重要な知見をもたらすものである。
