Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Neural circuit remodeling by astrocytes are well not known, especially in adult brain. Here, we found astrocytes after brain ischemia upregulate ABCA1 phagocytic pathway molecules and participate in brain remodeling via phagocytosis in ABCA1 dependent manner. We also found astrocyte specific ABCA1-deficient mice were resistant to neuropathic pain following sciatic nerve ligation. Since recent evidence shows remodeling of cortical circuits associated with the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain, these findings suggest that astrocytes could not only contribute to remodeling of damaged tissues but also functional or malfunctional circuit rewiring in diseased brain.
