Research Abstract

植物の葉のサイズ決定機構を明らかにするため、ある種の突然変異により、葉の細胞数が減少することによって、過剰な細胞伸長が誘導される「補償作用」と呼ばれる現象に着目した解析を行った。その結果、少なくとも3種の異なる補償作用を見いだした。これらは、補償作用を引き起こす遺伝子の種類や、誘導のタイミング、細胞伸長のカイネティクスなどの面から特徴ある性質を示す。一方、補償作用とは逆に、葉の細胞数が増え、細胞サイズが減少する変異株では、異形葉性と呼ばれる葉の形質の変化が早まることを見いだし、これに関与する遺伝子も複数同定した。これらの結果は、細胞増殖と分化に伴う細胞伸長とを統合する複数の制御系が並列に働くことで、最終的な葉サイズが決定されることを示している。
