Research Abstract |
Two descriptive studies were conducted to examine the knowledge and consultation needs among community people. As one of the studies, we carried out a self-recording survey on the health conditions and needs of the residents who use the Town Healthcare Room (THR) in Hyogo. Among 405 valid respondents, those with hypertension rank first (22.8%), followed by diabetes (9.1%), hyperlipidemia (8.9%), arrhythmia (1.2%), and rheumatism (1.0%). Survey results suggest that when providing healthcare guidance, nurses need to place importance on lifestyle check and metabolic syndrome prevention, particularly on diet and exercise. The other study examines the knowledge and information about dementia among community residents (n=858 of 3624, response ratio 23.7%). 41.2% of the respondents did not know the types of dementia while 57.5% had no knowledge of the medication for dementia. Also, 23.2% participants responded being which the person doubt of dementia surrounding them and 42.6% of them answered

that they know at least one of their family members or neighbors who suffers or may suffer dementia. 85.9% of the respondents would like to use THR as a consultation place for dementia. Based on the information received through interview with volunteer nurses, we developed the THR Manual to help them establish new THRs and manage advanced activities. The manual shows 3 phases with 27 items: preparation phase (10 items), establishment phase (10 items), and continuation phase (7 items). We identified the consultation skills for cancer patients so that volunteer nurses can learn and utilize the specialized knowledge and skills of faculty members. We categorized the consultation skills into six groups based on the interview with nurses. We continue to offer an educational training to the THRs' nurses and have found that after the training, their knowledge scores increased significantly(p<0.05). We confirmed that THRs' nurses are facing many difficulties in volunteering at THR because of "their busy working schedule" and "their bosses' lack of understanding". Cooperation and understanding in their workplace is a must for their volunteer work at THR. We developed a support website with FAQ for THRs' nurses, accessible from a cell phone. The FAQ contents were created based on the opinions received at the group work of training seminar and comments written on the Web. Less
