Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy in terms of the cognitive function of elderly people with dementia of a speed-feedback therapy system with a bicycle ergometer we devised, and to clarify whether the system could improve cognitive function, and neural activation in the frontal cortex played a role in improving cognitive function. The results were as follows:
(1) The changes in scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination, N.type Activities of Daily Living Evaluation Scale for the Elderly, and QOL Scale for Elderly Persons with Dementia evaluation scales between before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and 1 month after the intervention all showed significant differences between the intervention group and the control group. In addition, the attentiveness score immediately after completion of the intervention was significantly higher than before the intervention.
(2) When measuring O2Hb during 40% exercise, a gradual and sustained increase in O2Hb was found, which lasted for more than 5 minutes following exercise, suggesting that dynamic exercise with a moderate intensity improve cognitive function.
(3) O2Hb gradually increased in the Stroop color-word test (SCWT) and peaked 40-50s after SCWT onset, and its relative increase of O2Hb by SCWT was the same before and after exercise, suggesting that The changes of cerebral oxygen metabolism in the frontal cortex may be in association with improved cognitive function.
