Research Abstract |
The main result of our research task involves two aspects of the methodology needed in building a new collaborative e-Learning system for multiple and diverse learners. Firstly, typical collaborative learning methods expected to have educational effectiveness have been extended and formulated in general distributed learning environment, based on utilizing moderate and/or weak collaboration among various participants. Secondly, the rationale and effective realization of the system is validated. The prototype system is based on open source CMS, mainly using XOOPS cube, and SCORM compliant LAPIX and XSAM modules. Using Semantic Web technology, reasoning functions based on appropriate educational data and/or knowledge, and reasoning services for learning portfolio (with the facilitator offering relevant advices for participants) have also been developed. The dynamic nature of this methodology complements the current direction of what has become known as Web2.0, and its ability to play a role in the evolution of the next stage demonstrates its relevance to the progress of collaborative e-Learning systems. Furthermore, two experimental pragmatic e-Learning systems have recently been developed, one based on the ADDIE model and the other using programming theory, with the content targeting programming language courses, respectively. Wile neither is collaborative, findings from both show promise in terms of application to educational methodology for adaptive instruction. The main results of our research have been presented at a number of relevant domestic and international conferences over the three year period, from 2005 to 2007 inclusively, and have additionally been compiled as a report titled "Research and Development of a Collaborative e-Learning System and Educational Methods based on Enquiry-Based Learning and Adaptive Instructional Methodology", which summarized the three year research project.
