Research Abstract |
Recent cultural activities worldwide have fluctuated between globalization and localization. The goal of this research project is to approach the border-crossing cultural activities in this fluctuating tide, and to conduct a comprehensive study on the transcultural literary activities of writers prominent in this area. These transborder authors, both present and past, from the English-, German-, Russian-, east-European language-, and Japanese- speaking areas, are examined for their historical, social, and cultural roles as well as for their perspectives on the future. Since this is the final year of this research project, all our members submitted a paper on their respective themes. Their subject themes are: the border-crossing in Mexican-American literature; mid-European literature and local identity; a Caribbean writer Edouard Glissan's vision; the transborder authors in. Germanphone area; word play and multiculturalism; a passage from the national to the trans-border literature in Hungary, Japanese literature in Brazil, and Japanese border-crossing literature. Although treating a range of themes, within all these papers is the common recognition that bordercrossing is the essence of literature, whether the trans-border experience is that of immigrants, refugees, diasporas, nomads, or others. It is concluded that, transborder literature, despite its position as a minor literature, is one that it radicalizes and empowers each national literature and further opens a path to world literature.
