Research Abstract |
The purpose of the present study is to supplement Chinese, American and Japanese data so that it gets possible to conduct fair comparison among three cultures in our previously conducted four studies studies, i.e., "Description of efforts in the past", "An imagined diary of a day 10 years after now", "Importance judgment of information items for writing about a person", "Interaction between mother (teacher) and the child while stories are being read". As U.S.-Japan comparison study was conducted years before China-Japan comparison without anticipating Chinese study, there were a number of changes of method to accommodate to Chinese study. To establish comparability of two sets of comparisons, therefore, it was necessary to administer the method employed in China-Japan comparison to Americans to estimate the range of the effect of methodological change introduced recently, and it was also preferable to estimate the range of such influence with Japanese subjects, too. included : 1.Data collection in the U.S. With the help of researchers in Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and Kenyon College in Ohio, close to 100 samples were recruited and responded to our survey. The result showed that the data were basically comparable in spite of some methodological variability in data collection. 2.To make the interpretation culture fair, workshops were conducted inviting American and Chinese colleagues to discuss data interpretation. In 2006 at the occasion of the International Congress of the Study of Behavioral Development, a paper-symposium was devoted to pursue this line of debate with wider range of researchers. 3.We have concluded that the axes for comparing three cultures should be multilinear, that the use of bipolar axis used in many cross-cultural studies will over-estimate bipolar dimension of difference and that three cultures comparison was the minimum requirement for cross cultural studies. The usefulness of qualitative analysis along with quantitative method was also suggested. Less
