Research Abstract |
Unlike previous research, which had a tendency to incline towards Europe and North America, this study was performed in 14 countries, such as, of course, Western and, Asian countries, and the former socialist territories. This helped us to observe diversity in education carried out within the framework of "citizenship education", in a broader perspective. The interest in citizenship education has emerged out of various contexts, among which there is the end of the Cold War between the East and the West, the spread of globalization and diversity in society, danger of losing public mind, violence and loss of in politics among the young generation, counterterrorism, etc. However for most part, citizenship education has risen above the category of a study about the rights and the duties towards a nation state to which one belongs, and it is now possible to foster knowledge, values, attitude, and active behavior, which are required from a member of a community not only in a state, but at all

dimensions, which include local, national and global ones (transfer to a "post nation state"). On the other hand, it is also peculiar that there is still growing interest towards how to rebuild national identity in each country, and how to enhance social cohesion. By performing this research we caught a glimpse of transfer to a "post nation-state", and the movement which can be called revival of nationalism, both making simultaneous progress in citizenship education. In addition, such a remarkable factor in citizenship education as a strong international and transnational influence, which affects education of the whole nation in any country today, is also the matter which came to the surface. Globalization and diversity make their progress at various aspects, such as the idea of education, educational issues, the overall system of education and its inner systems, learners, etc, while participation of foreign and international organizations also rapidly advances and is mainly based on financial and teaching materials offers. We also confirmed that there are countries having economically dependent relations and strained political relations between their own local logic and transnational logic. In order to accurately grasp the trends in each country and, in the world, it is essential to perform a more profound research and together with that to promote analysis, firstly, of influence relations between the counties themselves and with the international organizations, and even more, to promote analysis from the transnational perspective.
