Research Abstract

子孫を残さず絶滅してしまった海生哺乳類の束柱類について, 歯の微小磨耗痕, 炭素・酸素の安定同位体およびストロンチウムなどの微量元素の組成から食性の推定を試みた. その結果, 束柱類は(1)汽水域で小動物もしくは植物を摂食していたこと, (2)束柱類を代表するデスモスチルスは, 吸引索餌によって小動物を摂取していたことなどが明らかになった. また, デスモスチルスの特異な柱状歯は, 吸引の際に顎を固定する支柱として機能したことを, 初めて合理的に説明した.
