Research Abstract

(1) Cellulose/TiO_2 hybrid spherical microbeads were prepared by a one-step phase separation method using a cellulose xanthate aqueous solution and a sodium polyacrylate aqueous solution. Various types of cellulose/TiO_2 hybrid spherical microbeads were obtained by using the several kinds of TiO_2 particles. The resulting hybrid spherical microbeads showed respective differences in the distribution of TiO_2 particles. EPMA observation of the surface of hybrid spherical microbead clearly showed where the TiO_2 particles were distributed. In addition, the extent of coverage by TiO_2 particles of the surface was also confirmed by external appearance, because the surface of cellulose/TiO_2 hybrid spherical microbeads on which there were relatively few TiO_2 particles appeared dark yellow. In contrast, the cellulose/TiO_2 hybrid spherical microbeads on which TiO_2 particles aggregated densely appeared white. It was suggested that the distribution of TiO_2 particles on the hybrid spherical m … More icrobeads was related to electric repulsion between the CSS^- group and TiO_2. The narrower the zeta potential distribution of TiO_2 particles in the sphering pH condition is, the more TiO_2 particles were driven out from the cellulose xanthate domain.
(2) In order to develop the environment friendly colored materials, cellulose composite spherical microbeads hybridized with TiO_2 particles and inorganic pigment were prepared by a phase-separation method using viscose and an aqueous solution containing sodium polyacrylate. We also report our findings regarding the relationships between cellulose xanthate and the electronic characteristics of TiO_2 particles used in the cellulose/inorganic material composite sphering process. These findings suggest that the location of TiO_2 particles in cellulose microbeads is related to electrical repulsion between the CSS^- group and TiO_2. The use as color pigment of TiO_2 powder is limited, since its color is white. The cellulose composite spherical microbeads covered with TiO_2 and Fe_2O_3 particles were developed.
