Research Abstract |
This research has been aimed to develop design methodologies for designing a series of products with systematically considering their mutual relationships for superior realization of mass-customization. The research activities have been deployed for building modeling schemes and design approaches of product architecture by paying attentions on typical patterns of various products and by focusing on representative design cases. Their accomplishments are summarized as follows : 1. Modeling framework and systematization of design methods for product architecture design were investigated as the basis for exploring the following subjects. 2. As to the design process of exploring superior alternatives for product architecture concepts, a framework for developing knowledge-management based design support systems was proposed. The framework was developed with the definition of ontology for representing and modeling the reflective design process in which design alternatives are generated. Its effectiveness and validity were ascertained with a prototype system implemented under the framework. 3. As to the design problem for deploying a product family by sharing base frames and by diverting functional components, the design problem throughout communalization, customization and lineup arrangement was studied under the optimal design paradigm. The underlying structure of their optimality was revealed and an optimal design methodology was proposed. Its meaning and validity were ascertained through a case study of engineering products. 4. As to the design problem of deployment of a common core to various specifications, an optimization based design method was explored for a practical design problem by identifying a mathematical model and determination factors of its optimality. It was implemented on a cluster-type parallel computer, and its promise was investigated.
