Research Abstract

The double tube, cross-flow and multitubular reactor were made as a palladium catalytic membrane reactor. In these reactors, the synthesis of phenol was conducted by supplying benzene and oxygen on one side of membrane and hydrogen on other side. The hydrogen permeated through the palladium membrane participated the reaction to promote direct oxidation of benzene. The phenol, cyclohexanone, carbon dioxide were produced as carbon containing compounds. The reaction field was widespread from entrance of reactor to the middle of reactor and a large reaction field leaded to the effective reaction. In the experiment of cross-flow reactor, the yield of all products decreased with increasing a flow rate of benzene and the production rate of carbon dioxide significantly decreased at a certain floe rate of benzene. There was an optimal flow rate of oxygen for the production of phenol and the temperature distribution was above 10 K in the reactor in the case of high yield of phenol at 175 degree C. The cross-flow reactor provided the relatively lower yield of phenol than that obtained with double tube type reactor. The multitubular reactor gave the phenol yield that was four times as large as phenol yield of cross-flow reactor and 1.5 times as large as double tube reactor. The shape of reactor was important factor to determine the phenol production from benzene.
