Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical construction process of the image of Brazilian soccer. In order to analyze this image, I focused on the historiographies of Brazilian soccer. On the basis of preliminary bibliographical review, the periodization for this study was divided in three : the first period is from 1940's to 1960's, the second period is from 1970's to 1980's and the third period is from 1990's until today.
As a consequence of this analysis considering with 1)the social background and the historical facts of Brazilian soccer, 2)the discourses of influential authors and their way of writings and 3)the suitable image of Brazilian soccer in each period, we could find out the following points:
1. In the first period (from 1940's to 1960's) we recognize the LOCAL viewpoint of a sport journalist Mario Filho, which paid attention to the black and the mestizo soccer players in Rio de Janeiro against the racism.
2. In the second period (from 1970's to 1980's) we recognize the NATIONAL viewpoint of an social. anthropologist Roberto DaMatta, which focused on the people surviving in Brazilian society under the military regime.
3. In the third period (from 1990's until today) we recognize the GLOBAL viewpoint of the recent sport historians like Antonio Jorge Soares, which is watching Brazilian soccer in the international context of globalization.
