Research Abstract |
Research Purpose 1. This purpose of this research was to reassess and revise materials targeting pre-undergraduate science students studying in our Japanese Language program using An Introduction to Fundamentals of Natural Science for Foreign Students Studying in Japan. Through these materials, students are exposed to both basic knowledge and specialized scientific thought and they are able to learn the Japanese that supports such knowledge systematically. We analyzed the existing materials(developed previously by these researchers) from the standpoint of Japanese language acquisition and improved them with the goal of creating new Fundamentals of Natural Science materials. Research Results 2. We conducted the following research for the new Fundamentals of Natural Science materials. 1) We conducted a vocabulary survey. We analyzed the linguistic elements and existing characteristics of the Fundamentals of Natural Science materials to elucidate the existing vocabulary, sentence structure an

d kanji compounds. 2) We analyzed the features of the basic science class, looking to clearly understand the course introduction and approaches, as well as the language acquisition of the students involved. 3) We surveyed and interviewed the students. We examined the learning methodology and the materials themselves looking for areas upon which they could be improved. 3. We field-tested the new materials we developed. By analyzing lessons and utilizing surveys, we were able to create superior materials and support a more effective learning environment through even better teaching techniques. Research Findings 1. Following number 2. above, "Research Results," targeting science students in the latter half of the basic level Japanese course, with the goals stated in number 1. above, we developed an improved, revised edition of An Introduction to Fundamentals of Natural Science for Foreign Students Studying in Japan. 2. We have presented papers on various research points at conferences and in professional journals. 3. We plan to deliver our most recent results, as detailed above, in June 2008. Less
