| Research Abstract |
This project broadly aims for a genealogy of women's body, characterized by 'child-bearing and child-rearing' function. As a basic research, this study focuses on female preachers, curers, and counselors in 17th century England. In the early modern England the perspective of functional and morphological body was gradually discovered in medicine, while people had still lived in the cosmology, that is, the harmony was in both the world: macro-cosmos and the human body: micro-cosmos. Pamphlets and reports about and of female preachers and cures reveal the complexity of their contemporaries' sex difference view.
In 17th England, the enthusiastic millenarianism was penetrated widely, and many secular sectarians preached and lead the multitude. The blank of censorship in the Interregnum made the public arena of speech and press, and promoted sectarian movement. Among them, there were many women preachers. irit was the most important. But their strong tensional discourse suggests the fear about subversion or disturbance of the static order relating to sex, included in the Cosmology. Women were considered 'the weaker sex (vessel)'and this idea held the Cosmological order of men and women.
Anna Trapnel, a prophet of the Fifth Monarchy, transported the God's spirits through her body. When she spoke out visions,her senses were closed and she was opened only to God. Spirits were moving circularly in the Cosmos.
Anne Bodenham, a teacher and curer, practiced by the power of the Mercury, the Sun, herbs, and secret books. She was taught the art by Dr. Lamb, a famous male astrologist.
Their practices and popularity tells the complex idea of woman, 'the weaker sex', well-known in early modern world on the one side, and wise and influential powerful being. Especially in the world of curers, and healers, sex difference was unclear, although their arts were meant by body metaphor.
