| Research Abstract |
On the bases of 10 articles of the Press Code issued by GHQ/SCAP, CCD put censorship on all printed materials in Japan from Sept 1945 to Oct 1949. This fact is well known but its details are yet in the dark, though the research group of Waseda Univ. is making the whole list of the Prange Collection with the contents and the names of materials. Our research deals with the factual examples of censorship in Hiroshima Prefecture in the cases of all 481 magazines contained in the-Collection.
This research has clarified two following points:
(1) The sentences which contain the words 'atomic bomb', 'A-bomb', 'pika-don', 'pika', 'atom', 'atomic desert', 'burnt-out area (supposed to be by A-bomb)', 'a fire-ravaged region (supposed to be by A-bomb)', '6th of August', and 'Hiroshima' are 313. Out of the 313 only 21 were deleted by the censorship and such notes an the margin as 'A-bomb' or 'disastrous scene by the bomb' are 9 cases.
(2) In our first report 'On the Journalism and Literature in Occupied Japan seen in the Censorship in the Prange Collection'(2003), 226 magazines issued in Hiroshima Prefecture were examined. The rest 255 magazines were examined this time, and we found 102 magazines were marked or checked. After all 434 places were checked or marked. But those mentions are like 'mention of occupation force' and 307 cases have nothing to do with any reference to A-bomb.
Through these two points we can say it is not always true that the censorship with regard to Atomic Bomb was more fierce than to any other points . The results of sensorship , so far as in 481 magazenes issued in Hiroshima Prefecture , show the sensorship were more careful and nervous about the Imperal system, militarism, nationalism, political and economic system, the Allied Nations, U.S.A. or Occupied force.
