Research Abstract

We began this research with the aim of re-examining the era of rapid economic growth, not only from the standpoint of drastic changes in politics, society and economics, but also on the level of' 'expression', as promulgated through media. Through our research of 2005, we were able to obtain a reasonably concrete picture of the' 'general Japanese public' in the era of rapid economic growth, a phenomenon brought about by the flourishing Japanese media. Following this, in our research of 2006, we allocated themes to each researcher, and through a process of mutual critique, concentrated on consolidating individual research theses. The results were published in 2007, under the title of Chronicles of the, Era of Rapid Economic Growth.
In September 2006, through the work of research collaborator Wang Cheng (Capital Normal University, China), and the support of the Japanese International Exchange Fund, the 'Academic Symposium on Chinese and Japanese Media and Expression in the Era of Rapid Economic Growth' was held in the Capital Normal University in Beijing. All members were able to give an oral presentation, facilitating a deeper understanding of the problems associated with the Chinese era of rapid economic growth, and we were able to engage in a lively exchange of ideas with Chinese researchers. Because of this exchange, we were able to include Chinese research on the cultural conditions in China's era of rapid economic growth, in the publication mentioned above.
Generally speaking, the effect that rapid economic growth has on the people living through it, and the whole society, has a universality that transcends the national divide between Japan and China. We believe that this research is significant, because it shows that it is possible to reveal the problematics of these effects, through an analysis of literature, music and other media of expression.
