Research Abstract

本研究では、西ヨーロッパと北米地域の女性表象の影響を強く受けた結果、日本の文学作品を中心とする言説の中に誕生した新しい女性の表象を分析・考察し、その諸相を明らかにした。「近代化=西洋化」する日本においては、ヨーロッパ文学のヒロインを模した存在として高等教育を受ける「女学生」が描き出されたが、そうした女性の表象の舞台として、近代化の過程を歩む都市が設定され、都市とそこに点在する近代的な装置が、彼女たちをめぐる言説を補強したことを解明した。また、非西洋地域として歴史的に「近代化=西洋化」を経験し、しかもその「近代的」な女性像と「伝統的」な女性像の間に大きな隔たりがあった日本以外の地域の女性表象についても調査・考察した結果、日本を含め、そうした地域において近代化の過程であらわれてくる女性像は、捩れた「エクゾティシズム」を身に纏っていることも明らかになった。さらに、女性の表現者たちが、男性たちの文学的想像力を利用する形で、「新しい女」像を構築しようとしたこともわかった。
