Research Abstract

The International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) is a comprehensive educational institution to foster future co-medical professionals such as nurses, therapists, pharmacists, technologists, social workers, and others. The objective of this research is to develop a new English language curriculum specifically responding to the needs for future professions. The outcome of this ESP program includes not only English proficiency but also intrinsic motivation that students continue to carry further as professionals.
Many preceding research papers have been covered, which resulted in the extensive and unique survey to grasp the needs at IUHW. The survey was conducted to (1) students, (2) graduates now working as co-medical professionals, and (3) faculty members. It was carried on in the form of written questionnaires and the interview. In order to develop the most effective program for ESP at IUHW, the needs of the three groups should precisely be analyzed. The result indicates some i … More nteresting phase for each group. Students clearly discriminate English between private use and future professional use, while faculty members point out the needs for reading and presentation. Graduates hope to gain English competency as the means of communication at workplace and also means of gaining the latest information through journals.
Based on the needs analysis, English language teaching at IUHW aims to realize the above needs. That is, abilities for both "spoken" and "written" English should be focused on. One accomplishment of this research is the new textbook for LL course, Clinical Scenes. Students learn to listen to and speak in English with the content familiar, interesting and useful now and in the future as co-medical professionals. The text also covers the variety of information from grammar, etymology, medical terminology, to cultural factors. The next challenge to complete this research is to develop curriculum focused on "written" English and to create a reading textbook. Less
