Research Abstract |
In this research project Waqf institution, the religious endowment institution in Islam, has been pursued for three years. The main results are as follows : (1) Materials necessary for the study of Fatwa, Islamic legal interpretations, especially for the study of Fatwas of Ebu Suud Efendi, a Sheyhul-Islam in the 16th century Istanbul, have been successfully found during the investigations at libraries and archives in Istanbul and Berlin. It is certain that they will enable us to demonstrate the change in the legal system concerning waqf system. (2) The critical text of the waqf register of Aya Sofya compiled in 1496 (classified as No.19 in Maliyeden Mudevver Catalogue of the Ottoman Arichives of Turkey) has been almost completed. It is the most important historical source for the study of how Waqf institution was exploited in the reconstruction of Istanbul. The preparation for the publication has been continued. (3) A paper 'Fatih Vakfiyelerinin Tanzim Sureci Uzerine' was prepared as the result of this research and was contributed to the journal of the History Society of Turkey, Belleten, the most authoritative journal in the field of Turkish history. It has been accepted to the journal by anonymous judges and will be published in its 263rd issue in April, 2008.
