Research Abstract

Throughout three year's research my main concern has been in perpetual chantries (chapellenies) under the control of the chapter of the cathedral of Avignon in 14th century. I analyzed intensively a register of the benefactors in the collection of the Archives of Vaucluse Departement; 1G762. The foundation of perpetual chantry is, of course, not only an act of devotion, but also an expensive settlement which involves transfer of many kinds of goods, including cash and lands. So the subject, perpetual chantry, relates both to the history of religion and to the history of economy. It is very attractive for me because it makes possible to take another approach to medieval ecclesiastical economy different from ordinary one of 《Economic History》 .
In order to set up this type of benefice, benefactors made use of《emphytheose》, a unique tenancy system in Provence. This was very appropriate method in a society in the late Middle Ages, characterized by high mobility partly due to thriving metropolis of Avignon and partly to general disorder after the Black Death. The chapter of the cathedral took forward-looking stance to this a little bit feudal system. By filling the role of controller for good function of it, the chapter made success in encouraging rich believers to this act of devotion.
In the end, we can see the chapter of the cathedral wished to use this《emphyteose》method in wide range of economic activity other than perpetual chantry. A typical cleric was Odo Monetarii, prior of the chapter(1363-1392) , who ordered to compile the register 1G762. He also was a man who reconstructed financial base of the chapter after the period of Black Death and desolation. His works will be a good subject for the next stage of study.
