Research Abstract

本研究は、サンフランシスコ講和条約発効後から1958年の日本人戦犯完全釈放までを対象時期としたうえで、日本人戦犯釈放をめぐる国際関係と政治過程を実証的に分析するものである
その目的は、講和条約発効後の戦犯釈放に関する旧連合国側の政策決定過程を仔細に検討し、いまだ不分明な1950年代における日本人戦犯釈放の政治過程に関する諸事実を発掘、解明することにある。裁判後の戦犯処理は、従来の戦犯裁判研究において看過されてきた問題であり、本研究は、日本人戦犯釈放問題に内外で初めて本格的かつ総合的な分析を加えるものと位置づけられる
本研究課題については、厳密な意味での先行研究は存在せず、1950年代の戦犯釈放問題という研究上の空白を埋める役割が認められる。研究期間を通じて多数の一次資料・情報の入手、系統的な分析作業を行ない、講和条約発効後の戦犯釈放に関する旧連合国諸政府の対応がかなりの程度、解明された
それ以前の時期、すなわち占領期の戦犯釈放に関しては、本研究計画の開始前に連合国側の政策決定過程を中心に検討ずみであり、それを本研究の成果と接合することで、占領期から講和条約発効後を通じた連合国側の戦犯釈放政策が明らかとなった
