Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to explore the conditions which enable NGOs and social movements to associate across borders. I focus on the anti-globalization movements by civil society, and assume that the World Social Forum(WSF) is a public space to visualize contestations presented by social movements. Through the participative observation at the World Social Forums in Mumbai, Bamako and Nairobi, I collected information and found that basic ideas of the WSF were applicable to different cultural environments although there were differences in contestations among social movements. I also assumed that international NGOs playd important roles to put demands presented at the public space on policy making process ; however, there are big divides between international NGOs and social movements although these divides varies among continents. These findings are presented in two articles, Multitude at the World Social Forum : Contestations from Bamako, Caracas and Karachi and Open Space created by Multitude : Lights and Shadows of the 7th World Social Forum published in Setsuzoku. Also, as a research summary for the three-year period, I made an oral presentation at the 49th Annual Convention of the International Studies Association under the topic of Alter-Globalization Movement at the Crossroads.
