Research Abstract

We designed and built the optical setup of the adaptive optics (AO) system. Also, we developed the software needed for the AO system. By virtue of original fast algorithms of image processing, we attained the working frequency of about 400 Hz.
We investigate the AO system through laboratory experiments, and then confirmed that it worked well for compensating turbulence of less than 99Hz. The average cross-correlation vale rose from 0.67 to 0.83, and the Strehl ratio increased from 0.12 to 0.58.
A theoretical analysis of the system performance showed that the cutoff frequency of the AO system is 105 Hz, which agreed well with the experimental result (99 Hz).
We applied the AO system to solar observations at the Hida Observatory, and confirmed that the AO system worked effectively in seeing condition of D/r0=14. The contrast of solar images rose from 0.036 to 0.041 with use of the AO system.
Assessing these results, we investigated the performance of a practical AO system for solar observation at the Hida Observatory.
We found that the working frequency had to be improved further and a new deformable mirror was necessary with more than 50 channels and larger stroke.
We published our paper in the journal "Optical Review" and presented our results in the Astronomical Society of Japan (2), Solar-research meetings (2), the Optical Society of Japan (2).
