Research Abstract

From the viewpoint of environment protection and forest saving, there has been recently a global tendency to reconsider development of wood-based materials. Effective utilization of thinnings, bark or waste wood has been studied widely. Above all, reuse of construction waste wood is an important point. Thus, it is essential for safe reuse to detect foreign materials in wood because foreign materials are often hazardous or toxic chemicals.
For the purpose of establishing an easy and quick xenobiotic analytical method, we investigated the characteristics in wood analysis of Raman, infrared, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, etc., and proposed an analytical system for wood-based materials including no wet processes by a combination of these analytical techniques. The system is as follows.
First, Raman or infrared measurements for waste wood are performed in order to detect adhesives, preservatives, or paints. When xenobiotics are found in waste wood, they are identified and further investigated the distribution by microscopic spectroscopy. Volatile organic compounds are quantified by gas chromatography if formaldehyde resin was used. When inorganic compounds are expected to be included in woody materials, we analyze elementally the materials by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
Our analytical system has not come in practice yet. We are currently improving the system for the sake of downsizing and simplification
