Research Abstract |
Jerkis derivative of acceleration. Effective and simple sensors to measure jerk directly are very few. Therefore, in order to use jerk signal to control object motion, value of jerk is often estimated from output of accelerometer. A very simple new seizmo type piezoelectric jerk sensor is proposed. Piezoelectric materials are usually utilized to measure acceleration as seismo-type sensors. In the piezoelectric acceleration sensor, electric charge generated by piezoelectricity is almost proportional to acceleration of a measured object. If electrodes on the both ends of piezoelectric materials are connected by a leading wire, the generated electric charge flows from one side to another side of electrode through the wire. Current is derivative of electric charge. As the value of electric charge is proportional to acceleration, the current could be proportional to the derivative of acceleration, i.e. jerk. This concept is principle of our piezoelectric jerk sensor. In the study, bulk type piezoelectric elements are utilized. Characteristics for wide frequency range are measured. New facts which could not find using bimorph elements are clarified. Sensor output at relatively high frequency range shows linearity. It is find that electric circuit for current detection using shunt resistor gives a problem that amplitude characteristics becomes large in low frequency range. The principle of jerk sensor can be applied to commercial pick-up elements of electric charge output type piezoelectric acceleration sensor. Some commercial acceleration pick-up elements are tested and proved experimentally.
