Research Abstract

Movement of electrostatic charged objects, such as a human body, near electronic equipment placed in a partly opened metal box can lead to the appearance of voltage induced in conductive parts of the equipment. The electrostatic induced voltage can cause malfunctions and even breakdowns of the equipment. The purpose of this study is to give a guideline for preventing a malfunction or a failure of electronic apparatus.
1. Measurement of the electrostatic induced voltage
In this study, the experimental device represented a situation in which a charged human body passes through near a partly opened metal box. And the induced voltage between two metal sheets having different areas placed in the metal box was measured. Measurement of the induced voltage was carried out using a sphere gap and an electromagnetic wave sensor in the metal box. Experimental results indicated that as follows. (1)The induced voltage between two metal sheets become higher when the area of metal sheet increased and th … More at this voltage depended only slightly on the area of grounded metal sheet. (2) Within the limits of this experiment, when the area of an ungrounded metal sheet is smaller than 0.18cm^2, the induced voltage can be reduced to less than the voltage that electronic components are broken. (3) When a metal sheet of one side was grounded, electrostatic discharge by the induced voltage occurred twice, but when two metal sheets were ungrounded, electrostatic discharge occurred many times.
2. Measurement of the electromagnetic noise by the electric discharge
In this study, for the measurement of the change in time of the induced voltage and the electromagnetic noise which was occurred with the sphere gap by the induced voltage in the metal box, the characteristic of an optical electric field sensor was examined by the measurement of the electric field strength. Experimental results indicated that it could be used as a surface electrometer the optical electric field sensor by calculating conversion equation and that the characteristics of the electromagnetic noise are different with value of the electric discharge voltage.
